Overselling Explained

Overselling has always been an issue of debate in the web hosting industry, whether its a good way to conduct your web hosting business or not, we will try to reach a point or a decision about it, and if it is a suitable way for the Cheap linux web hosting market.

Overselling, for the ones who are new to the word, is basically what the word mean, selling more than what you have, in terms of disk space and bandwidth, for example lets say you have 5GB disk space and 50GB bandwidth in a reseller plan, if overselling is enabled on your plan, you would be able to sell as much plans as you want until you actually finish up those space and bandwidth, which wont be the case if overselling wasn't enabled, in this case if you create a plan with 100MB disks space you have 4900MB  disk space left whether that client actually used his 100MB allocation or not.

It is, in most cases, up to the web hosting company to decide whether to oversell or not, overselling usually, especially with a big number of reseller plans, overloads the server in terms of memory usage etc. Which is also the case in the Affordable windows web hosting market.

Most control panels allow the server administrator to choose to enable overselling to specific accounts, usually overselling enabled accounts would cost more since you would be creating allot more accounts on your reseller plan, if it is not enabled you can usually request it to be enabled for a small extra charge which is the case with us at PremiusHosting.

Whether your in the Affordable windows we hosting market or your selling cheap linux web hosting plans, overselling is an issue for you to think about, should you oversell or not? I personally don't see anything in overselling as long as the quality will not deteriorate in terms of uptime, and the availability of the services on your web server, it is always better to keep overselling controlled and not enabled by default for your reseller plans, as you can see this article is targeting the server owners or VPS owners, if your a reseller owner, enabling overselling is usually better for you.
