This article will discuss the pros and cons of self hosting or home hosting,
what we mean by self hosting is having a server/s at your home or some other
place where you maintain the server, provide connectivity and maintenance for
that server, this method has a number of pros and cons that should be considered
if your thinking of offering affordable windows web hosting plans.
We will
begin with discussing the pros, 1st of all in a self hosting scenario, the price
of connectivity goes down, of course that depends on where you live and the
price of internet connectivity in that area and its availability, if the price
is not cheap, this will definitely be considered one of the cons.
The 2nd
advantage would be the more security that self hosting provides, since the
server would be under your nose, its almost guaranteed that no one will have
access to the data on the server but you, its a good advantage that you can add
to you cheap linux web hosting plans.
The 3rd advantage would be that problems
tend to get solved faster, especially if you know what your doing and your
around the server most of the time.
The 4th advantage would be the quality of
the server, in the case of self or home hosting you would either purchase the
server yourself or custom build it your self, in either case your sure of the
hardware and software quality as well. Although this advantage can be achieved
with non-self hosting through colocation where you send the server to the DC.
Now lets get to the cons of self or home hosting, the 1st disadvantage would
be that costs might be higher than normal web hosting at data centers, that
could come from high bandwidth rates as we mentioned in the 1st advantage above.
The 2nd disadvantage is the self hosting needs allot of work and a person who is
available almost 24/7 on call for any kind of emergency, which is hard to
achieve especially if your just starting out.
The 3rd and I consider it one of
the biggest disadvantages of self hosting is reliability, in a self hosting
environment you are limited to the capabilities that are available for the
normal person, for example you probably wouldn't have back diesel generators in
case of power failure like most of the data centers have, nor raised floors or
on site staff that are available 24/7 etc...
The 4th and last disadvantage
would be that you will be limited to how good you are, in matters of solving
hardware and software issues alike, there wont be anyone to blame in case
of any failure but your self.
